Sirloin from Hale Court Farm, forty-five days aged, carved to order.

What arrives

One plate, seven things
on it, no upselling.

Every roast lands with duck fat potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, buttered greens, honey roast carrots and swede, cauliflower cheese and a gravy made from the bones of the same animal. There is no separate charge for trimmings, because a roast without trimmings is not a roast.

  • Beef is dry-aged sirloin, carved pink. Say the word for well done and it will be well done, cheerfully.
  • Chicken comes as half a bird, big enough for two to share, with bread sauce.
  • Pork belly has crackling that snaps, and bramley apple with none of the sugar.
  • The wellington is celeriac and pearl barley in proper puff pastry, with an onion gravy that is vegan from the start.

How the day runs

Three sittings, loosely held.

12.00

First sitting

The quiet one. Best if you have small children, a dog, or a train to catch. Tables are yours for two hours.

14.15

Second sitting

The busy one. The room is full, the carvery board is going constantly and the noise is part of the point.

16.00

Last plates

We stop taking bookings at four and keep serving until the beef runs out, which on a good week is closer to half four.

17.00

Bar only

Kitchen shuts, the bar stays open for another hour for whoever is not finished with their afternoon.

Sunday questions we get asked

Can we bring the dog?
Yes, in the bar area and the two front tables. There is water and, if the kitchen likes the look of them, a bit of sausage.
Do you do smaller portions?
Under tens get a smaller roast at £12. Adults, we would rather you took a doggy bag than paid for less.
Is there a vegan option?
The wellington, as standard. Ask and the gravy, the potatoes and the greens all come vegan too.
How late can we book?
Online booking closes at 10am on the Sunday. After that, ring and we will squeeze you in if we can.
Fourth Sunday here and the roast potatoes have not slipped once. Beef comes pink unless you say otherwise.

We booked the twelve o'clock with a toddler and a nervous grandmother, and both of them left happy. That does not happen often.
